Updated

For the 2026-27 school year, Delone Catholic continues its partnership with WellSpan as the official provider of sports medicine to our student-athletes.

Dr. Matthew Posner

Colonel (Retired) Matthew Posner P'25, P'28, P'30, MD, serves as the team doctor, as well as the Vice President of the Delone Catholic Board of Directors.

Dr. Posner is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with a subspecialty certification in sports medicine. He recently retired from the Army after 26 years of active-duty service. His awards include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, the Order of Military Medical Merit, and the "A" Proficiency Designator for recognition of the highest level of professional achievement within the US Army Medical Corps.

Dr. Posner graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point with a degree in mechanical engineering and was commissioned as an officer in the Armor Corps. He served as a tank commander and Armor platoon leader while stationed in the DMZ in the Republic of Korea. After six years in this role, Dr. Posner opted to change career pathways and pursue a calling in medicine. After medical school, Orthopaedic surgery residency, and a sports medicine fellowship, Matt was assigned to Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He used his orthopedic sports medicine skills to treat Soldiers and families assigned to the 101st Airborne Division, 5th Special Forces Group, and 160th Special Operations Regiment. Colonel Posner deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and served as an Orthopaedic trauma surgeon at Camp Bastion Role 3 NATO hospital.

For the past decade, Dr. Posner served as Chief of Orthopedic Surgery and program director for the Sports Medicine Fellowship at West Point. He was the head team physician for West Point’s robust and highly competitive NCAA Division 1 athletic teams, including the Army football team. Lastly, Dr. Posner served as a faculty professor of Mechanical Engineering at West Point, where he taught undergraduate courses and conducted biomechanical research with Cadets, medical students, residents, and fellows.

Most recently, Dr. Posner worked with Penn State Health in State College, where he was appointed Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and served as the director of the sports medicine fellowship. He was also recently promoted to Associate Professor of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. Matt continues to serve on committees for several sports medicine organizations and routinely teaches residents and fellows at national educational labs and courses.

Dr. Posner has dedicated much of his career to studying the prevention of sports injuries and return to activity after sports injuries in our military population. His expertise includes shoulder, knee, hip, and ankle injuries in athletes. He specializes in utilizing cutting-edge techniques and treatments to return these patients to high levels of function and sports. He has served as a lead investigator on several multi-center studies on musculoskeletal injury prevention, optimization of surgical techniques, and long-term injury analysis on return-to-duty rates. He has published over 50 articles and book chapters in multiple peer-reviewed journals and Orthopaedic textbooks.

Dr. Posner grew up in the Army, and his family eventually settled in Gettysburg. His wife Mary hails from York, Pennsylvania, and together they are raising five children: Amelia (17), Ellie (13), Sarah-Jane (12), Teddy (7), and Heidi (3).

David Gerke

Also serving Delone Catholic this year is Athletic Trainer Dave Gerke, who brings a tremendous amount of experience at the high school and college level.

Gerke has been an athletic trainer for over 10 years and is also a certified strength and conditioning coach. Gerke’s family is from the Hanover area and he graduated from Southwestern High School. After college, Gerke graduated with a Master's Degree in Athletic Training from UNC-Greensboro in 2015.
