Mid-Season Reflections: Living the “Next Play”

The calendar tells us that fall athletics are at the halfway point. Our athletes have been practicing and competing since August, and the season has already given us a mix of highs and lows. Some of our teams have exceeded expectations, while others are still finding their stride. We’ve celebrated hard-fought wins and seen remarkable improvements. We’ve also endured the disappointments of injuries and setbacks.

That’s the beauty and the challenge of sports—it rarely goes exactly according to script.

As we pause at this mid-season mark, it’s the perfect moment to ask: How have we been living out our NextPlay Sportsmanship Initiative?

Celebrating Progress

“Next Play” is more than a slogan—it’s a mindset rooted in faith and character. We celebrate the athletes who have shown resilience, bouncing back after tough points or losses. We celebrate the teams that have learned to play with joy, and the coaches who have modeled steady leadership under pressure.

For some, playoff positioning is now in view. For others, the focus is still on growth, development, and finishing the season strong. Both journeys matter. Both are opportunities to honor God.

Reflecting Honestly

Have we always perfectly moved on from disappointing results? Probably not.
Have we always let go of a bad call that went against us? Probably not.
But are we learning? We hope so.

“Next Play” is about progress, not perfection. It’s about learning to respond—not react—when things don’t go our way. It’s about winning with class, and yes, suffering defeat with dignity.

A Word to Our Fans

Our athletes are not the only ones in the spotlight. Parents, families, and fans play a huge role in shaping the culture of our athletic programs. The encouragement you give from the stands, the way you respond to officials, and the example you set for young people—these all preach louder than any sermon.

Cheer with grace. Encourage with joy. Be the kind of fan that lifts up every athlete on the court or field, not just your own.

A Scriptural Anchor

The words of the Apostle Paul remind us of our ultimate goal:
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters. (Colossians 3:23)"

At Delone Catholic, athletics are more than a scoreboard—they are a way to worship, a way to grow, and a way to honor Christ.
