Awards and Scholarships
Since Delone Catholic High School opened in 1940, we have been blessed to be able to provide awards and scholarships exclusively available to our Squires. Many of these awards are provided through the generosity of individual benefactors and fraternal and community organizations, and many of them are made as memorials to loved ones of the donors. Each award and scholarship has its own criteria and selection process. Some are provided for general academic excellence. Others are awarded based on participation in certain extracurricular activities. Many have a financial need component, while others do not.
This area of the website includes a listing and description of many of these awards and their recipients. It should be noted that it is not a complete listing of awards and scholarships received by Delone Catholic students. Many of the listings of award recipients are incomplete as well. Additions to this section will be made on an ongoing basis as further research is completed.
Tuition Assistance Funds
Delone Catholic High School is fortunate to be able to offer tuition assistance through funding from various sources. There are individual benefactors who believe strongly in ensuring that students do not have to choose another school based on financial considerations. A growing number of these donors have established scholarship funds in honor or memory of loved ones. The majority of these funds are awarded directly by Delone Catholic High School, while several of them are managed by outside organizations. Details of the application process for those managed internally can be found in our guide on Affordability.

1974 Champions Scholarship
In January 2014, the 1973-74 boys’ basketball team celebrated the 40th anniversary of its PCIAA Class B State Championship. Members of the team were looking for a way to commemorate this accomplishment, which was the first team state championship in the history of Delone Catholic athletics. Knowing the significant sacrifices their own parents and others have made to send their children to Delone Catholic over the years, they founded the 1974 Champions Scholarship, a need-based tuition assistance scholarship for students at Delone Catholic.
Gilbert F. Andersen Scholarship
Gilbert F. Andersen ’79 was active in student government and a member of the football team at Delone Catholic High School. He continued his education at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, where he was a public relations major. He was involved in student life in college as well, participating in intramural athletics and school productions. Tragically, he was killed in a car accident on Jan. 3, 1981. His mother requested that memorial contributions be made to Delone Catholic to fund a memorial scholarship for students in need of tuition assistance.
Major David Borden Young Patriot Award
The Major David Borden Young Patriot Award was established by Roots for Boots to honor and recognize an incoming or returning Delone Catholic High School student who understands the importance of selfless acts of service to others and patriotism, while modeling leadership through ethical and moral example to his or her peers. Applications must be postmarked by Apr. 15 each year. For full details and application materials, please visit the Roots for Boots website by clicking here.

Britcher Scholarship was established on Sept. 28, 2010, through a bequest from Mr. Britcher. First awarded for the 2012-13 school year, the scholarship provides tuition assistance to a Delone Catholic student with demonstrated financial need.
Class of 1963 Memorial Scholarship
In anticipation of its 50th Reunion in 2013 and looking for a way to give back to Delone Catholic High School for the many valuable tangible and intangible benefits received from their education at the school, the members of the Class of 1963 established the Class of 1963 Memorial Scholarship Trust. The Trust was established on July 7, 2008 to honor the memory of the deceased members of the class by providing Delone Catholic students from the Adams Deanery parishes who qualify with tuition assistance. Preference is given to grandchildren and great-grandchildren of class members, regardless of parish affiliation. In order to make the scholarship award permanent and significant, the class targeted a goal of $100,000 by its 50th Reunion.

He was also the head coach of the boys’ basketball team from 2003 until his passing on Oct. 31, 2013. He won more games than any coach in the program’s history and captured a pair of District 3 championships.
Such was his impact on generations of students and players that his friends and college teammates founded the James A. Dooley, Jr. Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman at Delone Catholic with demonstrated financial need. A strong preference is given to a graduate of St. Francis Xavier School in Gettysburg.
Jane Ann Ernst Memorial Scholarship
John Gastley Scholarship
John E. Gastley ’59 was a teacher at Delone Catholic High School from 1964-1992, and he was the head coach of the Squires football team from 1966-1978, during which time he coached three undefeated teams in the South Central Pennsylvania Football League. In 1974, he was named the Pennsylvania Coach of the Year.
Following his passing on June 26, 2006, his family, former students and players wanted to honor his memory. The John Gastley Scholarship Foundation was officially incorporated as a non-profit organization in 2007, and works to raise the funds necessary to provide a full four-year scholarship at the supporting parish rate to one student in each class entering Delone Catholic. More information about the Foundation can be found at its website, www.gastleyfoundation.com.
Janet Lapham Hemler Memorial Scholarship
Janet Lapham Hemler ’63 graduated from Annunciation B.V.M. in 1959. She passed away in the summer of 2007, and her husband, Robert, also a 1963 graduate of Delone Catholic, established the Janet Lapham Hemler Memorial Scholarship in her honor. This one-year scholarship was awarded for the first time for the 2009-10 school year. It may be awarded to as few as one and as many as four students.
Female graduates of Annunciation B.V.M. School entering grades 9-12 at Delone Catholic are eligible. The student must be in good academic standing with Delone Catholic in that they are eligible for continued enrollment at the school. There is no honor roll status or minimum GPA requirement to be selected. Finally, there must be financial need.
Janet L. Keffer Memorial Scholarship
Janet L. (Neiderer) Keffer '68 was a gifted and influential educator who spent the majority of her career teaching children in their first or second year of formal schooling. The love and care she gave each of her students gave them a positive experience and a firm foundation on which to build in subsequent years.
Her husband, Loyola I. "Jack" Keffer '68, wrote, "Some of us spend years, even our entire lives, trying to figure out what we want to do, who we want to be, searching for what will make us happy, fulfilled and whole. And some of us are fortunate enough to be born with that sense of purpose. Janet was born to be a teacher. She completed 16 years of Catholic education, graduating from College Misericordia with a bachelor's degree in elementary education. She devoted 39 years to her profession, 15 of which were in Catholic schools, educating and living the 'Doers of the Word' essence throughout her teaching career. Her expressions of love and nurturing others were values fostered by her own Catholic education. Teaching was not a job, but a joy for Janet."
Following her passing on Apr. 10, 2018, after a long battle with cancer, Mr. Keffer asked that memorial contributions be made to Delone Catholic High School. Additionally, he provided a generous gift which has been used to establish an endowed scholarship fund which will be used in perpetuity to provide financial aid to students attending Delone Catholic High School.
Donald H. and Lovie F. Klunk Family Scholarship
Donald H. Klunk ’44 left Delone Catholic in December 1942 to serve his country in World War II. He returned to the Hanover area and worked as a plumber for many years. He and his wife, Lovie, have been generous benefactors to Delone Catholic. They established the endowed Donald H. and Lovie F. Klunk Family Scholarship in 2010, and it was awarded for the first time for the 2012-13 school year.
The scholarship provides tuition assistance to an incoming freshman at Delone Catholic. Each recipient is adjudged by the principal of his or her grade school to have adequate academic standing, and should have demonstrated financial need. Preference is given to a graduate of Annunciation B.V.M. School, McSherrystown.
Timothy “Tim” Kotula Scholarship of the York County Community Foundation
Timothy F. Kotula ’81 was an outstanding three-sport student-athlete at Delone Catholic High School. He passed along his love for athletics to the next generation by coaching several CYO and community league teams in a number of sports. He was also an active supporter of Delone Catholic. His three children are all alumni of the school. Professionally, he served as the Vice President and Corporate Secretary at E.K. McConkey & Co., Inc. Upon his death on Aug. 26, 2005, the Timothy “Tim” Kotula Scholarship was established through the York County Community Foundation. Each year, the scholarship is awarded to a student who shares Tim’s love of Delone Catholic, displays school spirit by participating in extracurricular activities, performs up to his or her academic potential, and demonstrates good character and financial need.
Clyde R. and Miriam L. Laughman Scholarship
Clyde R. and Miriam H. Laughman were the parents of six Delone Catholic alumni, and several of their grandchildren are also alumni of the school. Following Miriam’s passing on March 2, 1989, Clyde, or Ike, as he was known to family and friends, established the scholarship as a means of providing tuition assistance to Delone Catholic students in her memory. Though his name was already on the scholarship, it also became a memorial to Clyde after his death on May 16, 2009.
Thomas and Mary Livelsberger Family Scholarship
Thomas A. “Speck” and Mary E. (McKim) Livelsberger were both members of the Class of 1942. Their four children and six of their grandchildren are also graduates of Delone Catholic. Both were active volunteers at Annunciation B.V.M. Church, McSherrystown, at Delone Catholic and in the community throughout their lives. Through a family tradition of donating to a charitable cause instead of exchanging Christmas gifts and culminating with their 70th wedding anniversary in June 2014, members of the Livelsberger family founded the Thomas and Mary Livelsberger Family Scholarship in their honor. After nearly 75 years of marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Livelsberger passed away just over six weeks apart in the spring of 2019.
This is a tuition assistance scholarship for which the primary consideration is demonstrated financial need. The student will have a satisfactory academic and disciplinary record during the previous year, either at his or her previous school in the case of a freshman, or at Delone Catholic.
Memorial Scholarship Fund
When a member of the extended Delone Catholic High School family passes away and his or her family requests that memorial contributions be made to the school, but does not indicate a preference for its use, these gifts are placed in the Memorial Scholarship Fund. Each year, the interest from this fund is used to provide tuition assistance for students who may not otherwise be able to attend Delone Catholic.
Henny Noel Scholarship
Henry C. “Henny” Noel ’46 was the Director of Maintenance at Delone Catholic High School from 1958-1993. He was well known and beloved by the entire school community for his dedication to and love for the school and its students. He passed away on Dec. 29, 1993, just days after retiring. The first Henny Noel Memorial Tuition Assistance Golf Tournament was held the following summer in his memory, and each year, the proceeds fund the Henny Noel Scholarship, awarded to Delone Catholic students with demonstrated financial need.
Francis E. and Mary Louise Redding Scholarship
Francis E. “Gene” and Mary Louise (Staub) Redding were both 1941 graduates of Delone Catholic High School. Mr. Redding earned a Purple Heart as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and spent 32 years as the Post Master at the McSherrystown Post Office. They had nine children, eight of whom are Delone Catholic alumni, and both were active volunteers at the school for decades.
Following Mrs. Redding’s death on Aug. 3, 2000, their children established this scholarship in honor of their parents. It is open to incoming freshmen who are graduates of Annunciation B.V.M. School, McSherrystown, and active members of Annunciation B.V.M. Parish, with a minimum GPA of 3.0 for the eighth grade year. Recipients are eligible to have the scholarship renewed if they maintain a 3.0 GPA and a good disciplinary record at Delone Catholic. The scholarship became a memorial to Mr. Redding as well upon his death on Sept. 1, 2011.
Staff Sergeant Jeremy Redding Legacy Award
The Staff Sergeant Jeremy Redding Legacy Award was established by Delainey Robertson ’27 in recognition of our military service members and how they have selflessly served and risked their lives to protect the United States and fight to secure the values and liberties of the country, a freedom we all take for granted every day.
In 2023, Delainey was the recipient of the John Gastley Scholarship Award. During the application process, she quickly gained an understanding of the financial responsibility and potential burden placed upon parents who choose to provide a Catholic education for their children. Understanding this and recognizing that veteran poverty has been trending upward from approximately 5.6% in 2000 to 7.5% today, she wanted to create an opportunity that would serve two purposes. First, cultivate an environment that raises awareness about Post Traumatic Stress (PTS) and secondly, provide a scholarship opportunity for her peers that chose to help champion this mission.
Jeremy Redding was born on Oct. 9, 1974, and graduated from Hanover High School in 1993. Jeremy joined the United States Marine Corps in 1996 and attended boot camp at Parris Island. Upon completion of boot camp, Jeremy was attached to the 3D Low Altitude Air Defense Battalion and proceeded to Communication and Electronic Maintenance School at Twentynine Palms, CA. Jeremy married Lindsay Ross on April 22, 2002, and they had their first son, Jake, in December of 2002. Jeremy then deployed for his first tour to Iraq in 2003 with the Security Emergency Services Battalion and returned to Twentynine Palms where he was assigned to the Combat Logistics Battalion 7. Jeremy and his wife had their second son, Aaron, in December of 2005. Jeremy enjoyed time with his family, riding motorcycles, art, music, and the Denver Broncos.
Sadly, at the young age of 35, Jeremy succumbed to the effects of PTS on August 7, 2010. Jeremy, like many other service members and their families often bear this weight as their loved one suffers from this invisible wound affecting nearly 23% of our veterans today.
This scholarship aims to support sons, daughters, grandsons, and granddaughters of active-duty U.S. military service members, reservists, and/or honorably discharged veterans with the intention of educating others about PTS.
Applicants shall research and provide their findings on an announcement (pamphlet, brochure, or poster) titled “Post Traumatic Stress – The Invisible Wound.” This shall be based on researched facts. Additionally, the applicant shall write an essay based on their research (no more than 1,000 words) on what they learned about veteran PTS, what “22 a day” means to you, and how you could make an impact by raising awareness.
Applications must be postmarked by April 15 each year.
Charles A. and Phyllis J. Smith Scholarship
Charles A. and Phyllis (Johnson) Smith were both 1943 graduates of Delone Catholic High School. Mr. Smith was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, and he returned to the Hanover area, where he was active in the local real estate community and numerous fraternal organizations. They established a charitable remainder unitrust on Feb. 15, 2006, and named Delone Catholic as a beneficiary. Mr. Smith passed away on Oct. 18, 2006, and Mrs. Smith on Sept. 18, 2007. Since that time, the unitrust has provided annual gifts to be used for tuition assistance for Delone Catholic families.
Alfred E. Smith Scholarship
Rodney F. and Rosemary A. Smith Scholarship
Rodney F. ’60 and Rosemary A. (Hagerman) ’64 Smith were both graduates of and dedicated volunteers to Delone Catholic High School. Rodney was a member of the DCHS Athletic Board and a public address announcer for Squires home football games. They, along with their 12-year-old son, David, were tragically killed in a car accident on the way home from the Squires’ football game at Chambersburg on Nov. 3, 1979. Their 10-year-old son, Douglas, died several days later from injuries sustained in the accident. This scholarship was established in their memory to provide tuition assistance for incoming freshmen nominated by the Adams Deanery parishes.
Willard and Theresa Sterner Scholarship
Willard and Theresa Sterner are past parents of Delone Catholic High School. They understood the value of a Catholic education and wanted to allow families to have the choice of a Delone Catholic education into the future. When Mrs. Sterner passed away on July 28, 2000, Mr. Sterner established the scholarship to ensure that families who want to send their students to Delone Catholic would not be forced to go elsewhere because of financial need. This scholarship is given to students each year who demonstrate financial need, with priority given to students who are members of St. Joseph Parish in Hanover. Since Mr. Sterner’s death on March 12, 2008, the scholarship also serves as a memorial to him.
Louis B. Toler Scholarship
Louis B. Toler ’49 spent part of his youth living at the Paradise Protectory in Abbottstown, Pa. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served for three years. Following his return to civilian life, he missed the military. Mr. Toler joined the Air Force and served his country in the meteorology field for 20 years. He was a veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam Conflicts.
The Louis B. Toler Scholarship was established on Sept. 28, 2010 through a bequest from Mr. Toler. It is a tuition assistance scholarship awarded each year to a Delone Catholic student with demonstrated financial need. Preference is given to a student who is a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, Abbottstown, St. Aloysius Parish, Littlestown, or St. Joseph the Worker Parish, Bonneauville. It was first awarded for the 2012-13 school year.
Eileen M. Topper Scholarship
Eileen M. Topper was a bookkeeper at the Evening Sun and operated Fee’s Cut-Rate Store in McSherrystown. The Eileen M. Topper Scholarship was established in 2005 through a bequest from Miss Topper. William J. "Sonny" Shrader, was a member of the Delone Catholic Class of 1945. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He and his wife, Mary Louise (Spangler) Shrader Slagle '45, had four sons, and made it a top priority that all four would receive a Catholic education. Their sons all graduated from St. Vincent de Paul School, Hanover, and Delone Catholic. In order for this to happen, Mr. Shrader worked a full-time job and a part-time job, all while being actively involved with the McSherrystown Knights of Columbus and the Delone Catholic Athletic Association. Among the many events he worked for the Athletic Association was the weekly bingo which raised funds to provide opportunities for Delone Catholic student-athletes. Such was his love for the Squires, that he once refused to sit with his son, Bill '65, at a Delone Catholic football game. Bill was a coach for Diocesan rival Bishop McDevitt, and was scouting for the Crusaders' upcoming game against the Squires. Their father-son relationship resumed following the game.
The William “Sonny” Shrader Most Valuable Athlete Award was presented to a senior male athlete who has been a letter winner in two or more seasons. He must have distinguished himself as a representative of Delone Catholic High School and the community, and he must possess the following qualities and exhibit the same on and off the playing field: leadership, sportsmanship, responsibility, proper attitude, judgment and initiative, and he must be an individual who strives for excellence at all times.
This award has been presented each year since Mr. Shrader’s sudden passing in 1972. In 2012, a scholarship was added for recipients who choose to continue their education beyond high school. In 2024, Mrs. Shrader's name was added to the award, and it was opened to all athletes, male and female, who meet the other criteria.
